City of the Dead Edinburgh
Edinburgh's spooky City of the Dead tour is not for the faint of heart. This historic walk through the Greyfriars Graveyard has been scaring the wits out of visitors since 1999, and has since become one of the most popular tours in the city. Even the Edinburgh Post recently printed a glowing review of it, saying it "Puts the city's other ghost tours in the shade."
Its claim to fame is a trek through the locked portion of the cemetery, known as the Covenanters Prison. It is said that this area is the home to the now-infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist, an angry spirit that revels in taunting and terrifying members of the tour. Over four hundred and fifteen reports have surfaced since the tours beginning, of people claiming the have been scratched, touched or harassed by the poltergeist, or even knocked unconscious!
The City of the Dead tours depart nightly at 8:30, 9:15 and 10:00 pm from St. Giles Cathedral near the Mercat Cross. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Families should note that the tour is not recommended for children, due to the scary location and stories that are told.
