Edinburgh is known to be one of the most haunted cities in Britain, and you can visit endless sites that come loaded with spooky stories. The best way to get the most out of these spots is by taking a tour, but you can visit them on your own as well...if you're brave enough. One of the most famous of the city's so-called haunted sites is the Greyfriars Cemetery, where visitors can take the
City of the Dead tour, rumored to often experience poltergeists and other strange occurrences. Don't expect simply cheesy stories on this tour: the tour guides possess a wealth of local history and knowledge.
Edinburgh Castle is perched on an ancient volcano and overlooks the city. Inside the castle lie the Scottish Crown Jewels, a plethora of winding hallways, and numerous fantastic views of the city below. Many other attractions surround the castle, including a
tartan weaving mill and the
Scottish Whiskey Experience.
Edinburgh holds many exceptional museums and galleries that should not be missed. There are four separate galleries that make up the National Galleries of Scotland: The
Dean Gallery, the
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the
Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the
National Gallery of Scotland. The Museum of Scotland and Royal museum are connected, and are perfect for getting a taste of Scottish history and culture.
