National Gallery Edinburgh
For those looking to see one of the best collections of paintings in the world, the National Gallery of Scotland is the right place to be. The oldest of Edinburgh's art galleries, this beautiful collection of over 20, 000 items is located in the heart of the city, in one of its grandest buildings. Works from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism are on display here, most of which were purchased by the gallery over the years, although some works were gifts or are on loan from collectors, including works from the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
The shining pride of the gallery is its fine collection of Scottish works, the largest in the world, including paintings by Raeburn, Ramsay and McTaggart. Also included in various areas of the museum are the works of Van Dyck, El Greco, Botticelli, Velazquez and Bernini. The masters Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt and Poussain are well represented, and the gallery's post-impressionist works include paintings by Monet and Cezanne.
